There has been a change of insulin regarding diabetes. All diabetics who claim their insulin from State Clinics should note that the use of Actraphane insulin will be discontinued.

Dr Hemant Vallabh, of the Centre for Diabetes, told SOUTHERN GLOBE: “The reason for change is a money factor, due to Government who work by tenders.” Recently, the government had issued tenders for the procurement of insulin through a company called Lilly. According to Vallabh, the company is selling insulin at a much cheaper rate.

“The company, Novo Nordisk, who was distributing the insulin, Actraphane had therefore lost the tender,” he said. Vallabh explained that Actraphane Humilin N and Humilin R are the same thing. Actraphane is a combination of 1/3 Actrapid and 2/3 Protaphane. Therefore, Actrapid is the same as Humilin R and Protaphane is the same as Humilin N”. Diabetics will not be affected by this change. Vallabh highlighted: “If a diabetic is taking, for example, nine units of Actraphane, then he/she should take three units (1/3) of Humilin R and six units (2/3) of Humilin N”. Dr Soomati Natha said that the change from Actraphane to Humilin N and R is good, as the Humilin N and R have a substance called boulders. “Diabetics just need to make sure they check their blood sugar levels half an hour before they eat,” she said.
