SAPS and Sports against Crime in conjunction with the Youth Crime Prevention Desk, held a soccer tournament at the Vlakfontein Sports Grounds recently.

SAPS and Sports against Crime in conjunction with the Youth Crime Prevention Desk, held a soccer tournament at the Vlakfontein Sports Grounds recently.

Constable Thys Mokoena, who is the couch of the local SAPS soccer team, told SOUTHERN GLOBE: ‘’The aim of the tournament was to keep the youth away from crime through playing soccer during the festive holidays.’’ The tournament was played over a four day period. Registered teams were Sea Lions (Vlakfontein), The Best (Vlakfontein), Seven Stars (Hospital Hills), Try Again (Vlakfontein) and SAPS (Lenasia South).

The large group of spectators cheered as SAPS battled the field against opponents Try Again, who won two goals to one in the finals. Main Challenges which hindered the ultimate outcome of the tournament were last minute cancelation by sponsors. Mokoena highlighted that during the four day period, no house breakings were reported in the Vlakfontein area.

‘’Vlakfontein was a problem area prior to the tournament,’’ he said. Organisers place on record their gratitude to sponsors, Premier Soccer League, Grab a bite, Zakariya Park Engen Garage, FNB Trade Route Mall, K P Filling Station and private contributor Manie ? for sporting wear.
