A hoax bomb scare left staff and learners at Daxina Primary School in Lenasia South shaken in the first week of school.

According to Principal, Vadivalle Chetty, an anonymous male caller alerted the school to a potential bomb within the school’s vacinity. A public phone line was used and police officials could not track the caller. Chetty speculates that the hoax was due to the large number of learners who were ultimately turned down in this year’s high admission rate. Allegations of senior management incompetence in the situation were brought to light. Chetty dismissed these allegations saying that the school has a strict policy in place. “Learners are gathered in the schools ground facility, police were informed and they alerted the bomb squad based in Soweto,” he said.
The bomb squad team searched the school for close to an hour before declaring the school safe for proceedings. Chetty said that teachers were forced to escort younger students to a quiet area which they used as a sanitary facility.

Chetty emphasised that what constitutes as a hoax to some, affects schooling activity and the mental well being of learners.
