YOUR VERY OWN COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER COMES OF AGE

With social networking sites taking the internet highway by storm, SOUTHERN GLOBE’S management has embraced the opportunity of moving with the times to reach more readers. And what better way to connect with a wider audience, and the tech-savvy youth market in particular, than through the internet.

With leisure time a valuable commodity in the days of our lives, many do not have the time to read print media, often browsing through local and national newspaper headlines. Many of our readers are at work, having access to the internet, use two popular social networking websites like (www.facebook.com) and (www.twitter.com), amongst others to chat or catch up on what’s happening. In light of this, it was a natural progression to extend SOUTHERN GLOBE’S reach to an electronic platform.

Print is limiting, with the internet we are breaking barriers.  It also extends beyond our normal monthly print cycle to an almost daily update. To this end we are proud to announce our partner in this endeavor, local techno-whiz Ebrahim Essop of iServ Online Solutions. This 26-year-old’s vision is to connect people in a new way and also to give local business the opportunity to expand to the internet and make use of technology which larger corporations exploit daily.

He said: ``This is also a community initiative that is interactive – a seed that is being planted that will grow to become an invaluable communications tool`` from the people to the people’’. It’s intended to keep you the user completely informed and the nice thing is that YOU can have a say about what you want to see. It’s updated weekly so every Wednesday we go live with fresh news and updates.’’

It’s taking exposure of companies and individuals – not just to a local audience but globally. Every business today is online be it in the form of ADSL to keep in touch with suppliers or customers. And locally, this is still developing and not as advanced as the USA or UK but a step that is imminent.

It’s also about proving that local talent is abundant, that we have the ability to compete on a national level – and if with proper exposure – internationally. On a social level, the youth for example only use the internet for networking and interacting with each other. The older user would use the internet for information gathering only. Therefore we will cater for both.

This website aims to be a portal to the world where anyone of Indian origin may get information be it sports, entertainment and social features. We aim for all age groups – from Indian newsin Gauteng to Bolly wood, to business, gardening, international news and the like.– ``YOUR VERY OWN WINDOW TO THE WORLD’’.  It’s radical its hip, its happening.

We invite readers to submit articles of interest to us at online@southernglobe.co.za

Our Motto

-       To serve as custodians for the highest interests of local residents

-       To be a reliable medium of information between advertisers and readers with news being current, honest and newsworthy. Without bias, editorial policy is to report facts. Southern Globe covers all aspects including local governmental issues, community events, crime reports and investigative reporting and special features. We are not just an advertising medium but act as a custodian for the target areas we deliver to In other words, we are a must read with provocative articles that gets readers directly involved in water and lights issues, gripes with the local council, bad services and the like.

Community involvement

-       We have earned pride of place in homes in Southern Globeland.

-       We co-hosted an annual Human Rights function, which recognised individuals and organizations for their outstanding contribution to building a better and safer community. This was featured on SABC 3.

-       We host an annual Golf tournament which boasts golfers from Lenasia, Eldorado Park, Soweto and other parts of Gauteng. This year’s tournament will be held in Mid-October. Watch later issues for details.

National involvement

SOUTHERN GLOBE was only one of two independent publications in the country chosen by Print Media South Africa in a commitment to assist with the growth of emerging print media. The Print Development Unit, through a partnership with Johnnic Publishing, selected SOUTHERN GLOBE as a case study to develop a model for viable publishing. As a result - a book was published focusing on development, growth and opportunities for previously disadvantaged publishers to own and manage magazines and newspapers. Again, we were selected as one of six successful independent publications in the country in a similar case study by the Sol Plaatjie Media Leadership Institute (Rhodes University).

Publisher, Shirley Govender has just returned from a week’s programme on Essentials of Newspaper Management at the institute in Grahamstown. Her purpose was to ensure that out of respect for our readers, SOUTHERN GLOBE maintains editorial ethics, sound management style and quality journalism. This ongoing repositioning also guarantees that this newspaper falls in line with national publishing standards, putting YOU our reader in first place.

We care

We host or co-host community events like an annual golf tourney, feeding schemes, fund raisers for special causes. Worthy of mention is this publication’s most recent, successful effort in the case of a Lenasia accident victim who was the eventual recipient of Highveld Stereo’ s Christmas Wish. Thanks to all our efforts, he is now recovering from cranial surgery after part of his skull was removed from his abdomen and re-placed. This publication therefore is part of the very fabric and pulse of the greater Lenasia community, not just a business.

We CARE, WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT WE REPRESENT – that’s the difference – hence our motto: YOUR VERY OWN

COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER.
